Half of the top 10 performing stocks in the S&P 500 Financials Index last month were life & health insurers. Principal Financial Group Inc. led the pack with a 7.2% return, followed by Brighthouse Financial Inc. at 6.6% and Unum Group at 5.9%.
Meanwhile, the S&P 500 Financials Index lost 2.22% last month, compared to a 0.57% return for the S&P 500 as a whole. Of the 67 companies in the financial index, 49 ended September in the green.
