'sLegendary Entertainment has secured the rights to a Pokémon film, Variety reported July 20.

TheAmerican media company will be working with Japan's The Pokémon Company to produce a "DetectivePikachu" movie with which to launch a Pokémon live-action film franchise.

willreportedly manage the distribution of the film in Japan, while will distribute itoutside of the country.

Legendarysaid production is targeted to start in 2017, but further details will not bedisclosed, according to the report.

Thisdevelopment comes shortly after the launch of 's "PokémonGo" mobile game, which has quickly become a hit around the world.
