Walt Disney Co.'s Disney/ABC Television Group has started staff layoffs as part of a cost-cutting and restructuring strategy, Variety reported Oct. 12.
The unit has reportedly started notifying employees affected by the initiative, according to a person familiar with the matter. The cuts are expected to be lower than the 10% staff reduction initially anticipated. The cuts mostly impact non-content and operational areas of the company, with production and programming not expected to be impacted significantly.
The job cuts will affect all entertainment units of Disney/ABC TV Group, including Disney Channel (US), Freeform (US), Disney Junior (US), Disney XD (US)and production units ABC Entertainment and ABC Studios. Disney/ABC TV Group is also planning to post job openings for various new posts in the coming weeks.
Disney was originally planning to lay off about 300 employees at the Disney/ABC TV Group under the initiative, according to an earlier report by The Wall Street Journal.
