Amazon to host Siemens' next version of MindSphere industrial software

Amazon Web Services, Inc. will host Siemens AG's next version of the MindSphere industrial software platform, which will be released in January 2018, the company said in a presentation in Munich, according to Reuters.

The software collects and analyzes data from devices and uses it to help customers improve processes, according to Reuters. It had been running on the SAP cloud and will be up on Microsoft's Azure by April 2018.

The technology has been under scrutiny since Emerson Electric Co.'s failed $29 billion bid to buy Rockwell Automation Inc. in August, the newswire said. Siemens is viewed as the market leader, boosted by more than $5 billion in acquisitions over the past two years and reduced competition from its rival General Electric Co., which is narrowing its focus by shedding businesses.

Siemens said it was aiming to expand its database of connected devices and systems to 1.25 million from the current level of 1 million by the end of its fiscal year in September. It will achieve the target by widening its focus from autos and aerospace to cover all sectors, Reuters said.

The company reportedly added that a major proportion of its increased research and development spending of over €5.6 billion in this fiscal year would go to its digital factory division. The German company's R&D expenses totaled €5.2 billion in the previous fiscal year.
