Eurozone retail sales decline in December 2017

The seasonally adjusted volume of retail sales in the euro area fell 1.1% in December 2017, down from the revised 2.0% growth registered in November 2017, Eurostat data showed.

In annual terms, the calendar-adjusted retail sales index rose by 1.9% in the last month of 2017.

The monthly decline was attributed to declines of 1.5% for automotive fuel, 1.2% for nonfood products and of 0.7% for food, drinks and tobacco. Meanwhile, the biggest contributor to annual growth came from nonfood products, which increased by 2.7%. Food, drinks and tobacco rose 1.3% while automotive fuel fell 0.8% year over year, according to the statistical agency.
