SDG&E approved to develop 83.5 MW of battery storage projects

San Diego Gas & Electric Co. won approval from California regulators to develop five lithium-ion battery storage projects totaling 83.5 MW and one 4.5-MW demand-response program.

SDG&E, a Sempra Energy subsidiary, will contract with Renewable Energy Solution Systems Inc. to build a 30-MW/120-MWh battery storage facility in San Diego that is scheduled for completion by December 2019. Advanced MicroGrid Solutions Inc. will build a 4-MW/16-MWh storage project in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., that is expected to be complete by December 2019.

Fluence Energy LLC will build a 40-MW/160-MWh facility in Fallbrook, Calif., that is expected to be complete by March 2021. Powin Energy will build a 6.5 MW/26 MWh battery storage auxiliary in Escondido, Calif., expected to be completed by June 2021. Enel Green Power North America's 3-MW/12-MWh battery storage project in Poway, Calif., will come online by December 2021.

The demand response program will be administered by OhmConnect Inc., the utility said in a June 4 news release.

SDG&E said it expects to interconnect or develop 330 MW of power storage by 2030.
