Senate clears short-term funding bill to keep US government open

The U.S. Senate approved a short-term funding bill in an effort to avert a government shutdown.

The 66-32 vote followed a similar action hours earlier by the House. The bill now goes to the White House where President Trump is expected to sign it on Dec. 22, according to a report in The Hill.

Congress and the administration faced a Dec. 22 deadline to provide for additional spending.
