Equifax: Another 2.4 million US consumers affected by cyber breach

Equifax Inc. has identified roughly 2.4 million more U.S. consumers impacted by the cybersecurity breach revealed in September 2017.

The company said the names and partial driver's license information of the consumers were stolen during the cyberattack. Equifax did not reveal this information earlier as the customers' Social Security numbers were not stolen together with their partial driver's license information.

In the breach that impacted roughly 145.5 million people, the cyberattackers had primarily accessed consumer names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and driver's license numbers.

The company said it identified these consumers by referencing its records and through the help of an external data provider. Equifax said the stolen information was partial because, in most cases, it did not include the consumers' home addresses, or their driver's license states, dates of issuance or expiration dates.

The company's forensic experts determined that the attackers were mostly focused on stealing the Social Security numbers. Also, they found no evidence that the attackers accessed Equifax's core consumer, employment and income, or commercial credit reporting databases.

The company will notify these newly identified consumers directly and will offer them identity theft protection and credit file monitoring services for free.
