Rio Tinto is now offering responsibly produced aluminum from all of its Canadian operations, certified by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative, or ASI, to assure customers that it has been produced to meet the highest sustainability standards.
The company's BC Works smelter and Kemano power operations in Kitimat, British Columbia, which received certification against the performance standard in January, are now included in the "chain of custody" certification by ASI.
The material can be traced through this chain spanning Rio Tinto's Gove bauxite mine in Australia to its alumina refinery, aluminum smelters and casthouses in Quebec and British Columbia.
The company is working with the ASI on audits and certifications for other sites in its global aluminum business, according to a Sept. 23 release.
In April 2018, Rio Tinto was the first company to receive the ASI's performance standard certification. In November 2018, Nestlé SA's espresso brand, Nespresso, forged a partnership with Rio Tinto to only use sustainably sourced aluminum on all of its coffee pods by 2020.
