9 killed in Coal India mine collapse

A collapse of mine waste at the Lalmatia coal mine, part of Coal India Ltd.'s Eastern Coalfields operations in Jharkhand, India, killed nine people, and nearly two dozen are trapped, Reuters reported Dec. 30, citing a statement from the police.

"At that time, about 40 people were working in the mine and some of them managed to escape. Some of them have injuries," state police spokesman R.K. Mullick said.

The accident happened on the evening of Dec. 29.

Eastern Coalfields contributed about 9% to Coal India's total output of 50 million tonnes in November, according to the report.
