TOP STORIES

* Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Qualcomm Inc. expanded their global patent cross-license agreement, which covers mobile devices and infrastructure equipment. Additionally, Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm subsidiary Qualcomm Technologies Inc. struck a multiyear agreement to partner in various technologies such as 5G, covering a range of mobile devices.

* The U.S. government is considering building a 5G network to improve the country's cybersecurity, Reuters reported Jan. 28. Specifically, the government plan includes a secure 5G network that would prevent China from spying on U.S. phone calls.

CLOUD

* Cisco Systems Inc. closed the acquisition of cloud calling and contact center services provider BroadSoft Inc., the company said Feb. 2.

* Internap Corp. agreed to buy hosted IT infrastructure and cloud computing provider SingleHop LLC for $132 million in cash, the company said Jan. 29.

5G AND THE INTERNET OF THINGS

* Telstra Corp. Ltd. said Feb. 5 that it opened a 5G Innovation Centre at its Southport Exchange in Australia's Gold Coast region.

* South Africa's Vox Telecom is planning to launch an internet of things platform in 2018, ITWeb reported Feb. 2.

* DISH Network Corp. purchased ParkiFi Inc., a company that builds and sells patent-pending internet of things-enabled parking sensors with cloud-based analytics, the company said Feb. 1.

* ZTE Corp. is looking to fund the development of its 5G mobile network technology via a private placement, Reuters reported Jan. 31.

* Charter Communications Inc. is testing 5G technology in six U.S. markets, according to a Jan. 23 official blog post.

* Nokia Corp. said Jan. 19 it has signed an agreement to supply 5G baseband products to Japan's NTT DOCOMO.

VIRTUAL REALITY AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

* Vodafone Italia partnered with electronics company Arduino to develop internet of things-related applications, Telecompaper reported Feb. 5.

* Intel Corp. intends to sell a majority stake in its augmented reality division, Bloomberg News reported, citing sources.

* Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. Ltd., or Foxconn, plans to invest NT$10 billion in AI over the next five years, Focus Taiwan News reported Feb. 2.

* Publicis Groupe SA teamed up with Microsoft Corp. to develop and roll out AI platform Marcel, the companies said Jan. 29.

* Nikhil Chandhok, Google Inc.'s director of product for augmented reality, left the company to become Facebook Inc.'s director of product for Camera/AR, Chandhok said in a LinkedIn post.

* Alphabet Inc. unit Google, Tencent Holdings Ltd. and Sequoia Capital's China unit participated in a $15 million series B funding round for pharmaceutical technology company XtalPi Inc., the latter said Jan. 23.

* Facebook hired former IBM Corp. executive Jérôme Pesenti to become the company's vice president of artificial intelligence, Quartz reported Jan. 23. The company also intends to invest about €10 million in an AI research facility in France, Reuters reported Jan. 21.

* Baidu Inc. said Jan. 18 that it will set up a business intelligence lab to focus on high-efficiency data analysis for data-intensive applications, as well as a robotics and autonomous driving lab to further develop its autonomous driving technology.

* Comcast Corp.'s Comcast Ventures participated in a funding round for cybersecurity startup BigID, Multichannel News reported Jan. 30.

* Amazon.com Inc. on Jan. 25 submitted a patent application to the U.S. Patent Trademark Office for autonomous ground vehicles.
