Insurance moves: Travelers COO to retire; Marsh & McLennan names controller

S&P Global Market Intelligence presents a weekly rundown of selected executive management and other personnel moves in the insurance industry. The changes are listed by announcement date in reverse chronological order.

Dec. 20

WellCare Health Plans Inc. appointed William Yurkowski market vice president for South Carolina. Yurkowski was previously executive vice president at Atlas Systems Inc.

Chubb Ltd. has named Seth Gillston executive vice president and leader of Chubb's real estate and hospitality industry practice in its North American major accounts division. Gillston currently is the company's M&A and private equity practice leader. Steven Reiss, executive vice president of the real estate and hospitality industry practice, will help in overseeing the day-to-day operations of the company's major accounts real estate and hospitality industry practice area. Tom Agnello, casualty practice leader for the real estate and hospitality practice, will head the practice's center of excellence. Luke Testa will serve as Chubb's real estate and hospitality casualty underwriting manager, while Ted Aitken will lead Chubb's casualty practice for major accounts financial institutions.

CNA Financial Corp. appointed Michael Nardiello senior vice president. At CNA, he will be responsible for implementing underwriting strategies and operational objectives for large/complex property business. Nardiello joins CNA from Sompo International, where he was senior vice president global property product leader.

Dec. 19

Starr Cos. has named Steve Blakey as president and CEO of Starr Insurance Holdings, Inc. Blakey succeeds Chuck Dangelo, who is retiring from the company. Most recently, Blakey was vice chairman of Starr Managing Agents Ltd. and Starr International (Europe) Ltd. Starr Cos. is the marketing name for the companies and subsidiaries of Starr International Co. Inc.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas' board has appointed the company's Executive Vice President and General Counsel Matt All as its president and CEO, effective April 1, 2018. All will succeed Andrew Corbin, who is retiring March 31, 2018.

Following NFP Corp.'s acquisition of property and casualty broker TC Insurance Services, Frank Maglalang, TC's principal, will join NFP's P&C division as a vice president.

Dec. 18

Travelers Cos. Inc. President and COO Brian MacLean will retire March 31, 2018, after a 30-year tenure at the company.

Chubb has appointed Matt Booker as senior vice president of major accounts property in the U.S. Booker succeeds Brian Church, who was recently named head of international property for the company's overseas general business.

Foresters Financial has named James Boyle president and CEO, effective Jan. 8, 2018. Boyle joined Foresters Financial's board in June. He most recently was CEO of early stage healthcare technology startup Zillion Group Inc. Board members Sonia Baxendale and Mike Stramaglia, who served as co-interim CEOs, will return to their board committee chair roles on Feb. 1, 2018. Foresters Financial and Foresters are trade names and trademarks of Independent Order of Foresters.

Following NFP Corp.'s acquisition of Ontario-based P&C insurance broker Dalton Timmis Insurance Group Inc., its principals Brian Timmis, Domenic Tesone and Greg Padovani will join the executive leadership team of NFP in Canada. Its senior leadership team of Tara Carruthers, Josh Pauls and Dan Avon will also join NFP as vice presidents.

Symetra Life Insurance Co. has realigned its retirement sales and distribution organization. The company named Rich LaVoice executive vice president of retirement distribution strategy and promoted Wes Severin to senior vice president of retirement distribution. Andrew Farrell will take on an expanded role as vice president and national sales manager. LaVoice joined Symetra in 2010 as executive vice president of sales and distribution, while Severin was promoted to vice president of national sales in 2012. Farrell was named vice president in 2011, with responsibility for retirement sales development.

Rogers & Gray Insurance Agency Inc. appointed Erin Schaaf COO, the Insurance Journal reported. Schaaf joins from Arbella Mutual Insurance Co. where she held various leadership roles in personal lines products, underwriting and fraud detection, according to the report.

Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co. COO Dave Wingert has been named acting president of the company. Jeff Menary, who was named president and CEO after the retirement of Larry Jansen, was diagnosed with West Nile Virus and is undergoing rehabilitation, the company said. In his absence, Wingert is serving as president.

UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Tennessee has appointed Keith Payet CEO of the state Medicaid program, according to a Memphis Business Journal report. Payet joined UnitedHealthcare from Integra Managed Care, where he was the COO of the health plan. He replaces Rita Johnson-Mills, who stepped down from her role Dec. 1. UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Tennessee is a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group Inc.

Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance Co. has appointed Jared McGrath to head its new line of accident and health products in New Zealand. He was most recently the corporate manager of accident and health, New Zealand, at Chubb Insurance.

Dec. 15

XL Catlin has promoted Daniel Brookman to head of alternative capital, insurance-linked securities blog Artemis reported. Brookman takes over from Craig Wenzel. Brookman previously was senior vice president of alternative capital, according to the report. XL Catlin is the global brand used by XL Group Ltd's insurance and reinsurance companies.

Orchid Underwriters Agency LLC appointed Andrew Cyran to the newly created position of chief underwriting officer. Cyran was most recently executive vice president at Alliant Specialty.

Dec. 14

Intact Financial Corp. named Louis Gagnon president of Canadian operations. Gagnon is president of service and distribution. Mathieu Lamy will become COO, with North American accountability for claims, technology, Intact Lab and Data Lab, Ventures and people operations. Jean-Francois Blais, president of Intact Insurance, will retire. Mike Miller continues as president of U.S. operations and North American specialty lines.

XL Catlin has promoted Jay Lefkowitz to president of its global risk management business in North America. Lefkowitz previously was head of XL Catlin's U.S. risk management team.

Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc. has named Stacy Mills vice president and controller. Mills will serve as the company's chief accounting officer in her new post. She has been serving as vice president and deputy controller since January 2015. Mills succeeds Robert Rapport, who is retiring.

Chubb has named Brian Church executive vice president and head of international property for its overseas general business. Church will be responsible for all of the company's retail commercial property insurance business across Asia, Latin America, Europe, the Middle East and Africa. He previously worked as executive vice president and head of major accounts property for Chubb in the U.S. He will relocate to London from New York. Church succeeds Jarrod Hill, who was named country president of Australia and New Zealand.

Following American Family Insurance's acquisition of Chicago-based data and analytics software company Networked Insights, all 74 Networked employees will continue working for the company, including Networked Insights Founder and CEO Dan Neely and President and COO Gerry Komlofske. Neely will also become part of the American Family senior executive team.

Sun Life Financial Inc. has appointed Kevin Dougherty as executive vice president of innovation and partnerships, a newly created role. Dougherty will handle the company's digital health solutions, insurance research lab, external innovation partnerships and reinsurance business. Jacques Goulet will succeed Dougherty as president of Sun Life Financial Canada. Goulet previously was president of health and wealth at Mercer.

BMS Re US has formed a new solutions group and added two executives to the team. The company appointed Chang Liu as director of catastrophe analytics technical development. Most recently, he was director of catastrophe risk modeling and research at XL Catlin. Bradley Parent joins as assistant vice president/actuary from the Christopher Gross Consulting Group. The group will identify business trends and develop solutions by leveraging analytical and reinsurance expertise. BMS Re US Chief Strategy Officer Kirk Conrad will lead the group. BMS Re US is a unit of BMS Group Ltd.

Mercer made leadership changes for its global wealth and health businesses due to the announced departure of Jacques Goulet to Sun Life Financial Canada. Rich Nuzum was named president of the company's global wealth business. Nuzum was previously the wealth leader for Mercer's growth markets region. Martine Ferland, president for Europe and Pacific, and Ken Haderer, president for North America, will co-lead the global health business. Mercer Consulting is a unit of Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc.
