JD.com to enter Hong Kong through Singles' Day festival

JD.Com Inc. is set to launch its offerings for the first time in Hong Kong during the Singles' Day shopping festival in November, the South China Morning Post reported Oct. 17.

The festival, held annually on Nov. 11, is reported to be the world's biggest online sales event.

The e-commerce giant will offer a wide range of products, from consumer electronics to books, for free delivery in Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan between Nov. 1 and Nov. 14, the news outlet said.

JD.com's Hong Kong entry is a move to test the water for its global expansion strategy, according to the report. By expanding to the region, the company is likely to "compete head-to-head" with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., another e-commerce giant that also launched in Hong Kong during Singles' Day in 2016, SCMP said.
