US Army Corps opens comment period for proposed ND lignite mining project

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is soliciting public comment on Falkirk Mining Co.'s permit application for its proposed Falkirk surface lignite mining operations in McLean County, N.D.

The company aims to mine coal reserves from the Hagel, Travis Creek, Coal Lake Coulee and Kinneman Creek beds to supply combustible fuel to Great River Energy's 1,141.2-MW Coal Creek plant and 83.5-MW Spiritwood Energy Cogen plant in North Dakota.

Army Corps stated in the public notice that roughly 1,080 acres of wetlands and other waters will be disturbed as a result of the mining activities.

Written comments related to the project should be submitted by Aug. 15 to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers [Omaha District] North Dakota Regulatory Office, 1513 S. 12th St., Bismarck, N.D., 58504.
