Appalachian Power Co. will offer a discount to owners of plug-in electric cars, who will charge their vehicles when power demand is lower.
Approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission, the pilot program for experimental rate option will allow an average residential customer using 2,700 kWh annually to save about $86.50 for home-charging the vehicle during off-peak hours. The pilot program will last for a minimum of four years.
The American Electric Power Co. Inc. subsidiary expects to make the new option available to its Virginia customers before the end of 2019.
