Instagram rolls out new tools against online bullying, misinformation

Facebook Inc. is introducing a new feature on Instagram LLC that notifies users when their photo or video captions may be considered offensive.

Instagram is using artificial intelligence technology to detect bullying on the platform. Users who write potentially offensive captions will receive a prompt informing them that their captions are similar to those reported for bullying, giving them a chance to edit their captions before posting.

The feature will be rolled out initially in select markets before expanding globally in the coming months.

Instagram also expanded its fact-checking program, which began in the U.S. in May, by making it available globally. To combat misinformation, Instagram will label content tagged as false by a third-party fact-checker and reduce its distribution by removing it from the Explore and hashtag pages.

The company will use image-matching technology to find additional copies of false content and label them and do the same for content across Facebook and Instagram.
