Rio Tinto unveils largest violet diamond from Argyle mine

Rio Tintohas presented the largest violet diamond recovered from its Argyle mine in Western Australia, a 2.83 caratpolished oval-shaped diamond.

As of June, the rare gemstone will travel to Copenhagen, HongKong and New York for private tender viewings, the company said May 3. There isno official price tag for the Argyle Violet but it is thought to attract offersbeyond the A$4 million mark.

The diamond was polished from a 9.17 carat rough diamond discoveredin 2015.

Rio Tinto said the Argyle mine is the only source of violet diamondsand also accounts for more than 90% of the world's rare pink diamonds. In 32 years,the mine has produced only 12 carats of polished violet diamonds for tender.
