Bruce Power awards C$48M for additional equipment at Ontario nuclear facility

Bruce Power LP amended an agreement to award C$48 million to BWXT Canada Ltd. for the provision of additional steam drums at unit 6 of the Bruce B nuclear power plant. The amendment updates an original agreement reached in July 2016.

The BWX Technologies subsidiary will provide the steam drums as part of Bruce Power's life extension program for the facility, according to an Aug. 10 news release. BWXT has been supplying products and services to the Bruce Nuclear Generating Station since it went online in 1977.

The steam drums and associated steam separation internals will be designed and fabricated in BWXT's Cambridge, Ontario, facility as part of eight steam generators that will be supplied to the unit 6 reactor, BWX Technologies said.

In December 2015, Bruce Power and the Independent Electricity System Operator announced an amended long-term agreement that will see units 3 through 8 refurbished over the next two decades to extend the life of the site to 2064. The refurbishments will help Bruce Power reach full capacity at its nuclear facilities to fulfill Ontario's Long-Term Energy Plan commitments.
