Equinix Inc. closed its $175 million all-cash deal to acquire three data centers in Mexico from Axtel SAB de CV.

The facilities serve the Mexico City and Monterrey metro areas and offer about 115,000 square feet of colocation space, which will be added to the data center real estate investment trust's Equinix International Business Exchange portfolio.

The Mexico City metro area facilities include a 110,000-gross-square-foot data center with 37,000 square feet of colocation space, which the REIT said is the first such facility in Latin America with an energy cogeneration system. It has been renamed Equinix MX1 IBX. The second facility is an 80,000-gross-square-foot data center with 6,000 square feet of colocation space. The facility, which has been renamed Equinix MX2 IBX, will provide the REIT with expansion opportunities of as much as 60,000 square feet of colocation space.

The Monterrey area facility offers 25,000 gross square feet of data center space with 12,500 square feet of colocation space. It has been renamed Equinix MO1 IBX.

The REIT said it intends to offer the Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric service in the facilities, with Axtel being its customer and strategic marketing partner in Mexico.
