Amazon.com Inc.'s Indian unit will let sellers operate their own fleet of delivery vehicles for the company, The Economic Times (India) reported Oct. 8, citing sources.

The initiative was announced by the e-commerce giant in the U.S. earlier this year. Under it, people who have little to no logistics experience are given the opportunity to run their own delivery business with technology and operational support from Amazon.

Entrepreneurs who successfully participate in the program are entitled to a number of benefits including discounts on leases, insurance, fuel and an annual profit of up to $300,000.

According to the ET report, Amazon India has already teamed up with a number of logistics firms in the country who will lease and supply vehicles to Indian entrepreneurs. It is reportedly aiming to have a fleet of 1,200 vehicles within a year, expecting to contribute about 20% of the company's total deliveries in the following year.

The report said Amazon India refused to comment on the program's launch but noted that the company "continues to invest in its transportation infrastructure and other innovative ways to expand its supply chain capacity and speed up deliveries for customers."
