IAMGOLD Corp. said Oct. 3 that there were no blockades at the Rosebel gold mine in Suriname, contrary to media reports.
An earlier Reuters report, citing local news site Starnieuws, said a blockade was launched by illegal miners at the southern pits. This reportedly caused the miner to partly stop operations while removing equipment and personnel from the area.
The Toronto-headquartered miner confirmed that ramp-up activities at the southern pits of the Rosebel mine is ongoing. It also reiterated its full-year guidance for the operation, which incorporated several scenarios, including cases with no production from the southern pits and the Saramacca gold project.
In late September, IAMGOLD resumed mining operations in the southern pits of the Mayo and Royal Hill deposits at the Rosebel mine, with full ramp-up expected within about 30 days.
