PE-backed New York Mets could sell up to 80% stake to US billionaire Steve Cohen

U.S. Major League Baseball team the New York Mets confirmed in a statement that its owners are in discussions about a potential stake sale to U.S. billionaire Steve Cohen, Bloomberg News reported.

The team is reportedly in talks to sell as much as an 80% stake to Cohen in a deal that would value the club at $2.6 billion, a person familiar with the matter told the news outlet.

Cohen did not immediately answer a request for comment sent by Bloomberg.

Fred and Jeff Wilpon, who co-own the team through private equity firm Sterling Partners, would remain CEO and COO under the deal, Reuters reported, citing an email from Cohen's family office and Sterling.
