Verizon Communications Inc. unveiled plans to expand in-flight wireless connectivity via its Airborne LTE Operations initiative.
The initiative includes completion of technical trials in various locations using unmanned and manned aircraft on Verizon's 4G LTE network; an early adopter simulation exercise in Cape May, N.J., for first responders and emergency management personnel; and the launch of a new suite of services as early as 2017 on Verizon's ThingSpace Internet of Things platform, the carrier said Oct. 6.
The initiative also includes a new device certification process for drones and unmanned aerial systems on Verizon's 4G LTE network. Verizon will also work with American Aerospace and Sierra Wireless on aerial long-range applications.
In September, Verizon struck a deal to acquire Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Sensity Systems Inc., an IoT platform provider for smart communities.
