Hong Kong site marked for Disneyland expansion may see short-term repositioning

Hong Kong's government might repurpose a plot originally set to be the site for Disneyland's phase-two expansion and have it developed for short-term recreation, entertainment and tourism purposes, The (Hong Kong) Standard reported June 13.

Hong Kong Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Edward Yau was cited as saying Hongkong International Theme Parks Ltd., the joint venture company behind Hong Kong's Disneyland, had a 20-year option to purchase the plot, but had yet to do so. The site, on Hong Kong's Lantau island, has not been used since 1999.

Hongkong International Theme Parks was established by Walt Disney Co. in partnership with the Hong Kong government to build and operate the city's theme park, which was completed in 2005.

Yau said the government had been approached with development proposals from various parties and were "exploring and discussing" options for the site with them.
