Aquila Resources secures key permits for Back Forty project in Michigan

Aquila Resources Inc. has received two final permits from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality for its Back Forty gold-zinc project.

The final nonferrous metallic mineral mining permit and Michigan air use permit to install were issued following a public comment period that ended Nov. 3.

The mine permit application included Aquila's plan for mining, management of tailings and waste rock, reclamation, monitoring, contingency plan and plan for financial assurance. The application also contained a detailed environmental impact assessment supported by more than two years of baseline studies on environmental and cultural resources.

Two additional necessary permits, the National Pollution Elimination System permit and a permit for wetland impacts, are under consideration, Aquila said Dec. 29.

The company will now focus on completing its feasibility study, finalizing the remaining permits and raising the capital to fund the project through to commercial production, in the coming year.

Aquila also intends to undertake additional exploration, targeting a new mineralized zone as well as better defining the underground resource.
