Japanese consumers show more optimism in November

Japanese consumers' confidence continued its upward trend as the seasonally adjusted consumer confidence index gained 0.4 points to 44.9 in November from the previous month, the Cabinet Office's latest survey results showed.

All four consumer perception sub-indexes of the headline indicator posted monthly increases in November. The employment category advanced the most by 0.6 points, while consumer perceptions regarding income growth, willingness to buy durable goods and overall livelihood were up 0.5, 0.4 and 0.2 points respectively.

November's survey results showed that 78.6% of respondents expect prices to go up a year ahead, an increase of 1.1 percentage points from October, while 14.5% expect prices to be stable, a decrease of 1.3 percentage points from the previous month. The percentage of respondents expecting prices to decline a year ahead remained unchanged in the month at 3.7%.
