Grupo Bimbo outlines sustainability measures

Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV on June 5 outlined its sustainability initiatives focused on waste management, carbon and water footprint reduction, and achieving a sustainable value chain.

The Mexican packaged food producer said 92% of the total waste from its production processes are reused and/or recycled. The company added that it has established 30 plants with zero waste to landfill.

Grupo Bimbo also is targeting a 75% shift to renewable sources at its facilities internationally by the third quarter of 2019. In April, the company entered into an agreement to receive 100 MW of wind energy from Invenergy LLC as it shifts to renewable energy for its U.S. operations.

The maker of Sara Lee cakes added that it is now on the first stage of its move to source electricity from solar energy.

Grupo Bimbo has reduced its water consumption by 18% since 2009, and it has increased its accumulated water reuse by 25% since 2015.

To achieve a sustainable value chain, the company said it implemented pilot projects for corn and wheat sustainable farming in Mexico in partnership with the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center.
