Rakuten Inc. announced Sept. 9 that its payment services arm teamed up with Seven & i Holdings Co. Ltd.'s Seven-Eleven Japan Co. Ltd. unit to launch Rakuten Pay at 7-Eleven stores across the country.
Members can use their account to pay for convenience store purchases by having the staff scan the barcode on their Rakuten smartphone app, Rakuten Payment Inc. said.
Users of Rakuten Pay will be granted points under the company's loyalty program if they use the app.
The payment option will be rolled out at 21,034 7-Eleven locations across Japan starting Oct. 1.
The news comes more than a month after the Japanese chain announced that it will discontinue its 7pay cashless payment service by the end of September after it was hacked in July.
