US decision on Huawei licences may come next week

The U.S. government may decide whether to grant licenses to sell to Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. during the week of Aug. 5, Reuters reported, citing U.S. Commerce Department Secretary Wilbur Ross.

The Commerce Department has received over 50 applications from companies requesting special licenses to conduct business with Huawei. Ross added that he expects to receive more requests.

Ross wants to bring together all requests "to see them as a unified bloc," Reuters quoted the commerce secretary as saying.

Recent updates on a potential license decision come after U.S. officials held "constructive" meetings in Shanghai, China, on July 30-31.

Earlier in July, Ross said the department will issue licenses to U.S. firms looking to sell components and parts to Huawei where the arrangement does not represent a U.S. national security threat, but added the Chinese telecom company remains under high scrutiny.
