Comcast introduces 'enhanced movie extras' in partnership with 4 studios

Comcast Corp. released a new offering, enhanced movie extras, on Xfinity X1 in collaboration with Universal Pictures Home Entertainment, Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., Viacom Inc.'s Paramount Home Media Distribution and Sony Corp.'s Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

Enhanced movie extras enables users to explore, connect and engage with online content while they watch a movie. The new offering works on a technology standard developed by MovieLabs and its studio partners. The feature can be accessed through the digital purchase of eligible titles. The feature combines technology and content to allow users to access interactive and contextually integrated internet content directly while they watch a movie. The offering will include video clips and photo galleries as well that update contextually while the movie is playing, letting users browse content that is relevant to specific moments in the movie.

Comcast is offering a free 10-day sample of enhanced movie extras from Dec. 16 to Dec. 25. The interactive experiences include games, maps, 360-degree maps and set tours. The sample content is available directly on TV and includes movies like "Hotel Transylvania 2," "Jason Bourne," "Secret Life of Pets," "Star Trek Beyond," "Underworld" and "Warcraft."

Comcast plans to add more studios and movies into the offering in 2017.
