Top 10 VOD titles: 'Wonder' claims top spot

Lions Gate Entertainment Corp.'s "Wonder" displaced "A Bad Moms Christmas" to take the top spot on comScore Inc.'s top 10 video-on-demand titles for the week ended Feb. 18.

Based on The New York Times bestseller, the film tells the story of a boy, played by Jacob Tremblay, with facial differences who starts going to a mainstream school for the first time. Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson star as the boy's parents.

"Wonder" made about $132.0 million at the domestic box office and an additional $162.8 million overseas for a worldwide take of about $294.8 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The movie made about $131.7 million at the domestic box office, according to comScore estimates.

The film's reception skewed mostly on the positive side by both critics and regular audiences, with an 85% "fresh" rating and 89% audience score on RottenTomatoes.com. "Wonder doesn't shy away from its bestselling source material's sentiment, but this well-acted and overall winsome drama earns its tugs at the heartstrings," the site wrote. On Metacritic, the film received a score of 66 out of 100 and a user score of 7.7, while IMDb's rating stood at an 8.0, as of Feb. 28.

The only other new entry on the VOD chart for the measured period was Sony Corp.'s "Roman J. Israel, Esq." at No. 3. The drama stars Denzel Washington as driven, idealistic defense attorney whose life is upended when a turbulent series of events lead him to a crisis and challenge the activism that has defined his career.

The film was not a financial success for Sony, making $12 million at the global office on a production budget of $22 million. According to Box Office Mojo, overseas markets added only $76,162 to the film's global take.

"Intriguing yet heavy-handed, Roman J. Israel, Esq. makes the most of but never quite lives up to Denzel Washington's magnetic performance in the title role," wrote RottenTomatoes.com, giving the film a "rotten" 51% rating and a 56% audience score. Metacritic's score was a 58 out of 100 and the user score on the site was a 6.3. IMDb's score stood at a 6.4.
