HBO bags 34 Emmy awards; BET+ streaming service launches in US

The Program Guide highlights recent programming announcements from various networks and online video platforms in the U.S.

2019 Emmy Awards

* HBO (US) came out on top at the 71st Primetime Emmy Awards, held Sept. 22, winning 34 awards in total. The final season of HBO's "Game of Thrones" tallied an all-time, single-season-tying high mark of 12 wins, including 10 Creative Emmys. HBO's "Chernobyl" was the top limited series. Netflix Inc. came in second, scoring 27 total awards, while Amazon.com Inc. Prime Video bagged 15 total Emmys this year, including eight for creative arts, and its comedy "Fleabag" dethroned Amazon's own "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" as best comedy.

NBC (US)'s iconic "Saturday Night Live" earned a pair of wins for best variety sketch series and directing for a variety series. Meanwhile, FX (US) picked up a pair of awards.

Traditional TV

* Showtime (US) acquired the rights to the docuseries "Vice" from HBO and ordered a new 13-episode season of the show, Variety reported Sept. 24. HBO aired six seasons before ending its relationship with Vice Media in June. The series follows a group of award-winning journalists who cover the frontlines of global conflicts and civil uprisings, as well as issues dividing America from the climate crisis to immigration and gun control.

* The CW (US) is developing a female-led spinoff of "Arrow," The Hollywood Reporter reported Sept. 24. The new show will center on Katherine McNamara's Mia Smoak/Green Arrow and the Canaries, Katie Cassidy's Laurel Lance and Juliana Harkavy's Dinah Drake. "Arrow's" 10-episode final season begins Oct. 15.

* Viacom Inc. acquired exclusive cable rights to "Seinfeld" from Sony Pictures Television Inc. for all 180 episodes, according to a Sept. 21 news release. All of the series' episodes will air among Viacom's entertainment brands, including Comedy Central (US), Paramount Network (US) and TV Land (US), starting October 2021.

* Game show "Cash Cab" will premiere Oct. 7 on Bravo (US), Multichannel News reported Sept. 20. The show, which previously aired on Discovery Channel (US), features comedian Ben Bailey driving around in his cab while his passengers take part in a trivia show en route to their destinations.

* Season 14 of "Pit Bulls & Parolees" will air Oct. 5 on Animal Planet (US), Broadcasting & Cable reported Sept. 19. The show features Tia Torres and her family, who run a pit bull rescue center in New Orleans called Villalobos Rescue Center.

* Country music superstar Brad Paisley will host and executive produce a prime special on ABC (US) called "Brad Paisley Thinks He's Special," the network said Sept. 19. The hour-long program will air later this season. Kelsea Ballerini, Hootie & The Blowfish, Jonas Brothers, NFL legend Peyton Manning, and superstars Tim McGraw and Darius Rucker, will take part in the show.

Streaming

* The Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN Inc. struck a new agreement to bring its exclusive digital shows and content to Facebook Inc.'s Watch video streaming platform. At launch, ESPN's Facebook Watch lineup will include "The People's MMA Show," additional segments from "Always Late with Katie Nolan" and exclusive versions of "Countdown to GameDay" and "Fantasy Focus Live."

* Netflix will produce a new South Korean original series titled "Move to Heaven." The show follows a man with Asperger's who runs a trauma cleaning business with his uncle, the streaming giant said Sept. 22.

* BET Networks and Tyler Perry Studios' new subscription video-on-demand service is now live in the U.S. BET+ features over 1,000 hours of ad-free premium content, including exclusive new original programming and premier African American TV, movie and musical content.

* Eros Now, Eros International PLC's over-the-top South Asian entertainment platform, teamed up with Microsoft Corp. to build a next-generation online video platform on Microsoft Azure. The platform will provide content to consumers across geographies and languages, according to a Sept. 19 news release. It will include an OTT app video search functionality as well as voice search for video content.

* Comcast Corp.'s NBCUniversal Media LLC revealed that its upcoming streaming service will be named "Peacock" and offer a slate of NBC originals, such as "The Office" and "Parks and Recreation." NBCU will roll out the platform in April 2020 and offer it either as an ad-supported or subscription-based service.

* WarnerMedia's upcoming streaming service, HBO Max, ordered a two-season revival of the animated series "The Boondocks," Variety reported Sept. 18. The 24 new episodes along with the 55 episodes of the original series will come to HBO Max in fall 2020.
