Colgate-Palmolive stops Venezuelan plant ops due to box shortage

Colgate-Palmolive Co. has temporarily stopped production at its detergent and dish soap factory in Valencia, Venezuela because it ran out of cardboard boxes for shipping, Reuters reported Oct. 18, citing a union leader.

The company's cardboard box supplier, Dublin-based Smurfit Kappa Group PLC, halted its Venezuelan operations last month after the government took control of its local unit, the newswire said.

Carlos Rodriguez, a union representative at Colgate-Palmolive Venezuela, told Reuters that the company is now trying to import cardboard from Colombia.

A Colgate toothpaste factory is still open but only has a month's worth of cardboard stock, the report said. It may also suspend operations if it runs out of cardboard boxes, Rodriguez reportedly said.

Colgate-Palmolive did not immediately respond to S&P Global Market Intelligence's request for comment.
