China urges internet giants to improve content monitoring

China's National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications has called on Chinese internet companies, including Baidu Inc., Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and Tencent Holdings Ltd., to boost efforts to eliminate pornographic and vulgar content online, Xinhua News Agency reported Feb. 7.

In line with its campaign to remove inappropriate content online, the department has directed the companies to refine how they censor and filter posts and to do their legal duty to remove harmful content and its variations.

The regulator reached out to to 16 companies, warning that those that contribute to the spread of harmful information will be penalized.
