YouTube working on new music subscription service; Prime Video data disclosed

* Google Inc.'s YouTube, LLC is looking to launch a new premium music subscription service, TechCrunch.com reports. The new service is expected to offer the "the best of Google Play Music's context server" and YouTube's "breadth and depth of catalogue," YouTube's Global Head of Music Lyor Cohen reportedly said while speaking at the South by Southwest Conference and Festivals.

* Citing "internal documents" from Amazon.com Inc., which cover a period between late 2014 and early 2017, Reuters reported that the retailer recorded an audience of about 26 million people in the U.S. for all of its video programming on Prime. The documents also suggested that Amazon's most popular TV shows brought more than 5 million people worldwide to its broader Prime shopping club by early 2017.

* In the global race to build and deploy the next generation of mobile wireless technology, chip makers like Qualcomm Inc. and its competitors are leading the way, and markets and governments are taking notice.

* The tension over the government's role in 5G was highlighted after U.S. President Donald Trump barred Singapore-based Broadcom Ltd. from acquiring Qualcomm. Promoting the deployment and security of 5G has become a national priority for policymakers, but industry observers are torn over how to balance risks posed by governmental overreach against those of governmental inaction.

TV Networks

* All major television networks are expected to launch over-the-top, direct-to-consumer services by 2022, Multichannel News reports, citing a prediction by The Diffusion Group. According to TDG, the transition will increase direct-to-consumer subscriptions to 50 million by 2022.

* Gavin Polone, producer of the "Gilmore Girls" series, accused several Warner Bros. divisions, its parent Time Warner and The CW (US) network of using "dubious Hollywood accounting practices" to deprive him and his professional services firm of their profits from the streaming of the show and its Netflix Inc. revival series "Gilmore Girls: A Year In the Life," Deadline.com reports. In a filing with Los Angeles Superior Court, Polone claimed that the defendants erroneously deducted expenses for items that were not covered by their agreements.

Internet & OTT

* Facebook Inc. has rolled out its Express Wi-Fi Android app that lets users buy data packages from nearby hotspots, TechCrunch.com reports. The social-networking giant's Express Wi-Fi program is live in five developing countries.

* Time Warner Inc.'s CNN (US) teamed up with Magnopus to introduce CNNVR, a new virtual reality experience, on Oculus Rift headsets. Viewers can access CNN's new Oculus app to access interactive experience comprised of the network's breaking news video and original 360° stories, according to an official blog post.

* Netflix green-lighted "Travelers" for a third season. The sci-fi drama series will start shooting its third season this month in Vancouver, the company said.

* Netflix signed up German comedian Enissa Amani for a stand-up comedy special on the streaming service. Called, "Enissa Amani: Ehrenwort," the show will premiere exclusively on Netflix on April 26, according to a news release.

The day ahead

Early morning futures indicators pointed to a mixed opening for the U.S. market.

In Asia, the Hang Seng decreased 0.12% to 31,501.97, and the Nikkei 225 declined 0.58% to 21,676.51.

In Europe, around midday, the FTSE 100 was up 0.23% to 7,156.01, and the Euronext 100 was up 0.31% to 1,029.58.

On the macro front

The housing starts report, the industrial production report, the consumer sentiment report, the JOLTS report and the Baker-Hughes Rig Count report are due out today.
