Apple's new iPhones; Cox's FOX Sports deal; Splunk's SignalFx purchase

Top News

* Apple Inc. is working to unveil three new iPhone models with a new camera system at an event in September, Bloomberg News reports, citing sources familiar with the situation. The tech giant will also reportedly reveal upgraded versions of the iPad Pro, an entry-level iPad with a bigger screen, new versions of the Apple Watch and a revamped MacBook Pro laptop.

* Cox Communications Inc. will continue carrying 15 FOX Sports regional sports networks under a renewed long-term agreement. The agreement covers FOX Sports Arizona (US), FOX Sports Florida (US), FOX Sports Kansas City (US), FOX Sports Midwest (US), FOX Sports New Orleans (US), FOX Sports Ohio (US), FOX Sports Oklahoma (US), FOX Sports Prime Ticket, FOX Sports San Diego (US), FOX Sports South (US), FOX Sports Southeast (US), FOX Sports Southwest (US), FOX Sports Sun (US), FOX Sports West (US) and SportsTime Ohio (US).

* Data analytics software company Splunk Inc. agreed to acquire SignalFx Inc., a cloud monitoring platform for infrastructure, microservices, and apps, in a cash-and-stock deal of about $1.05 billion. The deal is expected to be completed in the second half of fiscal 2020, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

* While state legislative proposals to regulate biometric privacy continue to emerge around the U.S., the likelihood that they could increase financial liability for big tech companies depends on whether they allow private citizens the right to sue for violations, legal experts said.

Internet & OTT

* Alphabet Inc. unit Google LLC will not shut down its Hangouts service for G Suite users until at least June 2020, according to an official blog post. The U.S. search giant delayed the planned migration of the G Suite users to Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet after receiving feedback that they needed more time to migrate their organizations.

* YouTube will no longer support the direct messaging feature on its video-sharing platform after Sept. 18, according to a company post. The feature allowed YouTube users to share videos with their friends via direct messages.

* Microsoft Corp.'s contractors listened to the audio of Xbox One users speaking in their homes to improve the gaming console's voice command features, Vice Media LLC's Motherboard reports. The contractors said the recordings were reportedly triggered and recorded by mistake.

* Netflix Inc. will premiere the third season of adult animated comedy "Big Mouth" on Oct. 4, Variety reports. The second season of documentary series "Abstract: The Art of Design" will begin streaming on the platform Sept. 25, according to the report.

* Facebook Inc. removed 211 pages, groups and accounts on the social network and five Instagram LLC accounts for engaging in "coordinated inauthentic behavior" in Myanmar, according to a blog post. The social media giant found some of the accounts were linked to individuals associated with the Myanmar military.

* Walt Disney Co.'s Disney Channel (US) is teaming up with filmmakers Mark Duplass and Jay Duplass to produce an original short-form series, Multichannel News reports. The hip-hop themed series, titled "Shook," will stream on the network's YouTube channel.

* Eight Mile Style, the music publisher of rapper/songwriter Eminem, sued Spotify Technology SA over alleged copyright infringement, according to The Hollywood Reporter. In the lawsuit, Eight Mile Style claimed Spotify did not secure a license to reproduce Eminem's songs on its music streaming platform.

Technology

* Apple is in the final stages of approving flexible organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, screens from China's BOE Technology Group Co. Ltd. for iPhone units in 2020, the Nikkei Asian Review reports, citing sources. The tech giant, which is looking to cut costs and reduce reliance on Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., will reportedly decide by year-end on a potential partnership with BOE for OLEDs.

* Amazon.com Inc. is expanding its Portland Tech Hub with a new 84,000-square-foot office that is expected to add 400 new tech jobs. The U.S. e-commerce giant will hire new positions in fields such as software development, operations, IT, support engineering, solutions architects and product management.

* French President Emmanuel Macron urged the U.S. government to help reform taxes applied to big tech companies, Reuters reports. Macron said tech giants failed to contribute to the common good by paying unfairly low taxes.

* Mustafa Suleyman, co-founder and head of the "applied" division at Google's artificial intelligence unit DeepMind Technologies Ltd., was put on leave, Bloomberg News reports, citing a company spokeswoman. Suleyman led controversial projects such as a U.K. mobile healthcare app dubbed Streams, through which DeepMind gained illegal access to patient records.

Multichannel

* T-Mobile US Inc. restored service after an outage barred users from making phone calls or sending text messages, Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray tweeted. The company did not say what caused the disruption.

* Comcast Corp. asked the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to deny beIN SPORTS' request for an emergency review of its decision dismissing the sports broadcaster's carriage complaint against the cable giant, Broadcasting & Cable reports, citing a document. Comcast said there were no procedural or substantive deficiencies in the FCC's order despite beIN SPORTS' claims.

The day ahead

Early morning futures indicators pointed to a lower opening for the U.S. market.

In Asia, Hang Seng dropped 0.84% to 26,048.72, while the Nikkei 225 gained 0.05% to 20,628.01.

In Europe, around midday, the FTSE 100 fell 0.59% to 7,161.28, and the Euronext 100 was down 0.39% to 1,050.52.

On the macro front

The jobless claims report, the PMI composite FLASH report, the leading indicators report, the EIA natural gas report, the Kansas City Fed Manufacturing index, the Fed balance sheet and the money supply report are due out today.
