AltaGas plugs in 20-MW Calif. battery storage facility

AltaGas Ltd. has completed the Pomona battery storage facility in the East Los Angeles Basin of Southern California on-time and on-budget, according to a Jan. 27 company release.

The 20-MW lithium-ion battery system is touted as the largest battery storage facility currently in operation in North America. The project achieved commercial operations Dec. 31, 2016.

Under a 10-year agreement, the facility will provide resource adequacy capacity to Edison International subsidiary Southern California Edison Co. for a continuous four-hour period, which represents the equivalent of 80 MWh of energy discharging capacity.

"Offsetting periods of peak power with 80 MWh from battery storage is enough power to feed the electricity needs of approximately 15,000 homes over the four-hour period," AltaGas President and CEO David Harris said in the release.

AltaGas will receive fixed monthly payments under the agreement and will retain the rights to earn additional revenue from the energy and ancillary services provided by the batteries.
