Netflix bulks up on Chinese content with iQiyi deal

Netflix Inc. entered into a distribution deal with Baidu Inc.-controlled iQiyi for some of the latter's drama series.

The U.S. streaming giant secured the rights to iQiyi drama "Tientsin Mystic" for several international territories and to crime series "Burning Ice" for Southeast Asia. Both will be available in selected markets during the first quarter of 2018.

Netflix also obtained rights to film trilogy "Chosen," a co-production between iQiyi and Sony Corp.'s Sony Pictures Entertainment, Screen reported Dec. 4.

Netflix's latest deal with iQiyi follows its agreement with Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s Youku for "Day and Night" — Youku's first online drama series acquired for global distribution.

IQiyi also inked content deals with international distributors Television Broadcasts Ltd., which picked up streaming rights to "Tientsin Mystic" for Hong Kong and Macau, while Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd. will broadcast the series in Malaysia and Brunei. TV operator StarHub Ltd. obtained rights to the drama for Singapore.

The deal follows an agreement in April under which iQiyi will feature Netflix content, marking the U.S. company's Chinese debut.

In November, iQiyi said it will launch more than 200 online shows and will invest more than US$1.5 billion in original content in 2018.
