Report: Apple asked to conform to official manufacturing plan in India

The Indian government asked Apple Inc. to coordinate with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on component manufacturing plans in the country, The Economic Times (India) reported April 4, citing a senior official.

Apple reportedly presented its plans last month to Indian electronics ministry officials, the Revenue Department and the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, highlighting issues over the company's lack of a local supplier base.

The senior official, who saw the presentation, said Apple would not be allowed exemptions from India's phased manufacturing program for mobile handsets and tablets. The program aims to localize the production of adapters, chargers, batteries, printed circuit board assemblies and other items, according to the report. However, the official added that minor adjustments could be made for Apple.

Apple, meanwhile, is seeking import concessions for its suppliers until a local vendor base is established.

India's Department of Revenue recently refused tax concessions sought by Apple for its iPhone manufacturing plans in the country.
