President Trump targets health care law with first executive order

U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order targeting the Affordable Care Act within hours of being sworn into office on Jan. 20.

Trump's new @POTUS Twitter handle included a tweet with a picture of the president signing the executive order as well as documents for the swearing in of two of his cabinet picks: James Mattis for Secretary of Defense and John Kelly for Secretary of Homeland Security. Both men were confirmed by the Senate on Jan. 20.

The executive order allows federal agencies to "waive, defer, grant exemptions from or delay" rules embedded in the health care law, and it directs agencies "to minimize the unwarranted economic and regulatory burdens" of the law, according to a report by The Washington Post.

President Trump's chief of staff also issued an executive memorandum to freeze regulations from government agencies, the Post report said.
