Newcrest Mining Ltd. halted the Cadia gold mine in New South Wales, Australia, due to a discovered breach at the northern tailings dam, it said March 10.
According to a same-day report by The Guardian, the event occurred after seismic activity in the area.
The company said that it implemented a comprehensive geotechnical monitoring system, securing the area around the dam. The release from the dam has been contained in the southern tailings dam.
Newcrest notified regulators and vowed to work with them as it completes the review. It added that no environmental damage was observed and there was no immediate threat to personnel safety.
The company is assessing the impact on operations, which will remain suspended pending further investigation.
The mine's operations were also halted for over three months in 2017 following a large seismic event.
