FCC plans to expand video description requirements

The FCC is reportedly looking to expand requirements for videodescriptions from five of the top cable networks to 10.

Part of the implementation of the 21st Century Communicationsand Video Accessibility Act, video descriptions are required of the top five cablenetworks and the top four broadcast networks, according to a March 31 Multichannel News report. The FCC is pushingto extend it to the top 10 nonbroadcast networks and an additional broadcast network.

Video descriptions requirements for broadcast companies underthe CVAA will increase to 87.5 hours per year from 50 hours a year. It is an effortto create universal communications access for viewers by the FCC.

Networks, such as 21stCentury Fox Inc.'s FOX(US), Comcast Corp.'sNBC (US) and 's will get a chance to commenton the proposed expansion before the FCC votes on the final order.
