Ahead of the release of the Bank of England's stress test results Nov. 28, figures from the European Banking Authority give a spot check on the balance sheets of six of the seven participating institutions.
As of mid-year 2017, Nationwide Building Society had the highest common equity Tier 1 ratio, which measures high-quality capital as a share of risk-weighted assets, according to the EBA's 2017 transparency exercise. Standard Chartered Plc had the highest leverage ratio, which shows capital as a share of total leverage exposure, i.e., on- and off-balance-sheet assets.
All six banks reduced their nonperforming loan ratios between the end of 2016 and the middle of 2017, with Nationwide and Barclays Plc pushing their figures below 1%.
Santander UK Plc is included in the BoE stress test but not in the EBA transparency exercise, which evaluates the company highest in a corporate structure, in Santander's case Spain's Banco Santander SA.
