Nuclear update: US output higher despite Oyster Creek loss

Total U.S. nuclear plant availability took a few steps forward early Dec. 14 to 94.63%, up from 94.29% on Dec. 13 and also remaining above the 90.98% posted on the same day in 2015.

Total U.S. production rose despite the loss of Exelon Corp.'s Oyster Creek plant in New Jersey. In a Dec. 13 press release, plant operators took the unit offline at 11 a.m. ET to repair the turbine control system. No mention was made as to when the unit will be restarted. Prior to being idled, the reactor was pegged at 45% power.

On the other hand, Exelon's Nine Mile Point 1 in New York returned to 100% power early Dec. 14, climbing from 25% on Dec. 13. In addition, unit 1 of Entergy Corp.'s Arkansas Nuclear One in Arkansas saw production increase to 12% early Dec. 14, up from 1% the day prior.
