Norsk Hydro seeks deal with authorities to resume Alunorte operations

Norsk Hydro ASA said March 27 that it is in talks with Pará state's environmental authorities to resume normal operations at its Alunorte alumina refinery in Brazil.

The company is also seeking an agreement with the public prosecutor, Ministério Público, and Norsk plans to evaluate the prosecutor's counterproposal for an agreement.

Pará's public prosecutor ordered the company to undertake corrective measures at Alunorte following an initial probe in the wake of flooding at the site related to heavy rainfall.

The company noted that inspections by several local, state and federal authorities, including environmental regulators IBAMA and SEMAS, confirmed the integrity of the bauxite residue deposits and found no evidence of a spill or overflow.

"There are no indications that there have been any significant or lasting impact on the environment following the extreme rainfall in February," it said.

Results of the ongoing internal and independent reviews will be available April 9.
