Amazon India boosts customer, Prime numbers with sale

Amazon.com Inc. said it expanded its customer base and Prime membership pool in India through its Great Indian Sale event held Aug. 9 to Aug. 12.

Without giving specific numbers, the company's India unit said the first day of the promotion was its biggest day year-to-date in terms of sales.

Amazon India also said it doubled the number of customers from the country's second-, third- and lower-tier cities during the event, with new customers from areas including Tinsukia, Banka, Purnia and Karbi Anglong.

Amazon's Prime membership service, which it introduced to Indian customers in July 2016, was the top-selling product of the sale. Prime in India offers unlimited free expedited shipping along with early and exclusive access to deals, in addition to unlimited video streaming, for a yearly fee of 499 Indian rupees, compared to the US$99 annual fee for the service in the U.S.

Amazon India also said its payments service Amazon Pay had a 20-fold increase in the number of users during the event, and that there was significant growth in sales across multiple categories including smartphones, fashion, TVs and appliances, music and storage devices and baby products.

As of Aug. 11, US$1 was equivalent to 64.14 Indian rupees.
