The closureof Kingsgate Consolidated Ltd.'sChatree gold minewas ordered as part of Thailand's move to shut down the country's entire gold miningand exploration industry — with all mining to cease by the end of the year and governmentagencies to stop issuing and renewing licenses, The Sydney Morning Herald reported May 11.
Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha attributed the decisionto public uproar over environmental and health issues.
About 100 people living around Chatree were found to have highlevels of toxic materials in their bodies, according to a government-backed study,but scientific reviews failed to associate such levels to the operation.
In January 2015, Thai authorities ordered a of operations at Chatreeamid concerns that the mine affected the health of the people living nearby.
Kingsgate CEO Greg Foulis said the company has not received aformal notice about the decision from the government, although it is "seekinglegal advice."
Chatree is operated by Kingsgate subsidiary .
