Aflac Inc. plans to convert its Japanese branch into a subsidiary by the end of 2018.

American Family Life Assurance Co. of Columbus, which currently operates as a branch of Aflac and does business through Japanese agents, on Jan. 1, 2017, will set up a new office to prepare for the branch's incorporation, according to a Dec. 13 release.
