PPL, GE launch initiative to develop distributed energy technology software

PPL Electric Utilities Corp. and GE Power Digital are collaborating to develop and test software to manage and control electricity from renewable and stored energy sources.

The joint initiative will help shed light on the impact of distributed energy resources, or DERs, on grid management and to hasten the development of technology that would support it.

The PPL Corp. subsidiary will adopt the General Electric Co. unit's "DER orchestration" software, and integrate it with its advanced distribution management solutions. The combined systems will allow for the improvement of grid operations, maintenance of grid reliability, enhancement of load forecasting and improvement of bi-directional communication with DERs, according to a Nov. 13 news release.

PPL and GE plan to test the software within the utility's service territory.
