Google, Mozilla, Apple to block browser spying system in Kazakhstan

Alphabet Inc. unit Google LLC, Mozilla Corp. and Apple Inc. moved to block the Kazakh government's online surveillance system using their browsers.

Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox installed technical solutions to block an encryption certificate that would allow the Kazakh government to snoop into users' browsing activities and data, including account information and passwords.

Apple said it would also take similar measures to secure its Safari browser from the encryption certificate, Reuters reported, citing a statement.

Mozilla in 2015 denied the Kazakh government's earlier attempt to install a certificate on its trusted root store program, which would have also been used to intercept user data.

Kazakhstan's National Security Committee has halted the test rollout of the surveillance system, but warned it could be deployed again if cyberthreats emerge, according to Reuters.
